Intensive Beginner Blacksmithing Class (1-3 Days)

CA$125.00

Contact me through the contact page of this website to plan dates, and make your $100 deposit by adding this “product” to cart, and purchasing it. The full cost is $400 per day. Full payment is made with cash or E-transfer when you arrive. Here is an opportunity to learn blacksmithing from the ground up! There is NO class pre-requisite for this, nor do you have to have any prior forging experience. This is a great opportunity for those wanting a well-rounded introduction to the art of blacksmithing, as well as beginners who’ve had some forging experience, but are wanting to learn more about how to forge efficiently and learn effective techniques while making projects. I’ll also give information on how to set up your own shop, including explanations on how to make and set up your own tools.

I’ve had the privilege to teach beginner blacksmithing to a range of people over the years, most notably instructing a blacksmith 4-H group on and off for about 4 years. The curriculum that I go through is one that I have personally designed and modified over time to something I wish I would have had when I started blacksmithing! Therefore, if you decide to take this class, I hope it will be of good value to you.

This class covers:
-What is Forging? Historical Perspective?
-Safety, Tool organization, How to operate in a shop environment.
-Explanation of tools, including their parts, uses, and substitutes.
-How to swing a hammer, stance, and how to do it all ergonomically.
-Fundamental forging structures and principles.
-Material composition and selection.
-Basic heat treatment.
-Striking.

Some of the projects include:
-”J” Hook
-Set of punches
-Bottle opener
-Hardy hot cut
-Fire poker
-Wedge/notch cross
-Flat bit tongs
-Leaf key chain
-Horse head buckle/bottle opener
-AND MORE! (The amount of projects we get done depends on how many days the student decides to take, and how fast the student’s skills develop.)

IMPORTANT! You MUST be of sound mind and body to take this course! You will be in a hot, dangerous, mentally, and physically demanding environment. Swinging hammers and forging lumps of 2000 degree steel is no joke, so don't treat it as such!

Bring a note pad, proper cotton work clothes, proper footwear, and PPE (leather gloves, safety glasses, ear protection and a dust mask or respirator).

You must be AT LEAST SIXTEEN years old to take this class. (Exceptions can be made)

The class starts at 8:30am, and will probably end at 4-5pm that afternoon, with a half-hour lunch break. You must bring a bag lunch, unless you want to purchase a provided meal, in which case, call me!

Accommodations available on-site, contact for more information.

Directions to the shop, and a google map pin are on the contact page of my website.
